Art Week NYC Announces 32 Participating Institutions, New Museum Programming for Inaugural Fall Event
by Leigh Anne Miller · ARTnewsOn Friday, Art Week NYC, a four-day event taking place throughout the city from November 11 through 14, announced a list of 32 participating institutions. They include museums like the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Queens Museum; nonprofits like ArtTable, the Madison Square Park Conservancy, and the Brooklyn Experimental Art Foundation; and many other citywide arts organizations.
ARTnews, along with sister publication Art in America and Artforum, three of the leading authorities on contemporary art, launched Art Week NYC earlier this summer. The event promises to bring together galleries, museums, artists, collectors, cultural organizations, and audiences over four days of programming, from walking tours to artist talks to gallery openings. Art Week NYC is centered around the city’s four main gallery neighborhoods: Chelsea, the Lower East Side, Tribeca, and the Upper East Side.
“New York City’s world-renowned galleries and museums draw art lovers from all over the globe, but they belong first and foremost to the New Yorkers who live here,” said City Council Speaker Julie Menin about Art Week NYC. “Art Week NYC opens the door for our city’s own artists and art lovers to support and be inspired by the creative institutions in our own backyard. The success of our city’s cultural sphere has always been built on the voices and hearts of New Yorkers, and this week gives more of them a way to take part.”
On Saturday, November 14, there will be a full day of public programming at the New Museum, Art Week NYC’s main institutional partner. (The New Museum, along with select other institutions, are presented in partnership with Bloomberg Connects.) Artforum’s series of five talks, titled “Art and the City,” will take place in the New Museum’s theater and will feature artists, architects, filmmakers, critics, and writers in conversation over the course of the day. Topics will include the redesign of notable museum spaces across the city, the growing movement of artists into filmmaking, the economic conditions faced by artists working in New York, and the impact of machine intelligence on studio practice.
