You have to hand it to Antonio Marras: His artistic sensibility remains stimulated by his beloved Sardinia, its history and traditions, filtered by his imagination, and every season he stages dreamy and theatrical shows. Let AI worry about data, marketing strategies and predictive analytics.

He has developed a loyal community of fans who let themselves travel through eras and fashions through his eyes. It was no different Wednesday, when Victorian-style dresses cinched at the waist were shown flanked by delicately embroidered parkas and pleated skirt and shirt combinations mixing denim and floral motifs.

Paraded outside his headquarters in a park on a basketball court covered in antique carpets (even the backboards were wrapped in elaborately printed fabrics), the show was opened up to curious onlookers, although the sun, still blazing despite the early fall date, at times prevented guests fanning themselves in the heat to perceive some of the details in the looks. A pity, because the embroideries and crystal embellishments sparkling on the signature military jackets or evening gowns, and the floral motifs on the chiffon dresses were exquisite — and all carefully crafted by hand by Marras’ artisans in Sardinia’s Alghero.

The designer played with contrasts, transparencies and fluidity juxtaposed with rigorous constructions; baby dolls and a short dress with bows were seen next to checkered or multilayered skirts and jackets with corset-style lacing in the back.

Academy Award winner Adrien Brody sat front row and there was plenty for him to choose from as Marras’ ideas seamlessly translated into menswear — a patchwork floral and checkered jacket here, a laid-back shorts-and-shirt combo there.

Models returned for the finale, each carrying a chair to sit beside a long table set for a wedding luncheon, as the bride rushed to join them, disheveled and tripping on the rugs, while the groom danced down the long table, eventually uniting with her and leading the models out.
