At the South African ambassador’s residence in Paris, Maxhosa Africa’s spring 2027 show opened with a performance that quickly became a shared experience. As South African artist Sjava’s spiritual vocals filled the room, the audience joined in, turning the opening into a collective celebration.

Titled “Izihlwele Zivumile,” meaning “the ancestors have approved,” the collection was presented during its first runway slot at Paris Fashion Week. The brand first started showing in Paris via a presentation format in 2023.

The title was aimed at reflecting the communities and cultures that have shaped designer Laduma Ngxokolo’s journey, and that sense of connection carried into the clothes. Ngxokolo reimagined the modern, knit-focused wardrobe through Xhosa heritage and local iconography, in a visual language that felt contemporary, elevated and joyful.

Ngxokolo described the brand’s purpose as “celebrating that beauty and making sure that it’s seen on global platforms like this.” Paris, he said, is “the best fashion hub in the world, and we believe that we deserve to be at this platform.”

The show, overall, was a well-executed celebration of the designer’s heritage and dovetails with a fast-growing Africa: optimistic, self-assured and eager to take part in the world’s cultural conversation.
