“Setting Out for Stardom” was the headline WWD bestowed on 26-year-old fashion wunderkind Isaac Mizrahi‘s arrival in 1988. His first collection, which made the daily’s front page, was a reminder that American fashion could be chic, youthfully glamorous and fun, with a capital “F.” Though he touted, “I am not a personage,” his persona made him a fashion star, and remains one of his most valuable assets. His career has been a fashion fairy tale of sorts, marked by the 10-year run of his namesake label, setbacks and creative highs that included expansion of his vision in and beyond fashion at Liz Claiborne, QVC and Target and through “Unzipped,” the 1995 documentary starring himself and a host of friends. Today, his social media presence reflects the continued interest in his uncensored New York wit, candor and storytelling while his sold-out performances at Café Carlyle are an ideal holiday starter. And while the latter envelops the personage he once denied, his recent return to Target as creative director at large is proof that fashion remains his first love.
