The Emmys red carpet has always had its own fashion personality. With television and streaming constantly introducing new faces and up-and-coming actors, there is a freshness and unpredictability to the dressing that you don’t always get on Hollywood’s bigger red carpets. This year, that energy translated into clear trends.

Metallics were one of the night’s biggest stories, bringing some much-needed glamour back to the red carpet. My favorite was Zendaya in custom Prada, with its plunging V-neck and her short hair. She can do no wrong. She is simply a winner when it comes to the red carpet, understanding that the goal is not just to look beautiful but to create an image.

Red was another major player, from Mariska Hargitay’s fabulous red sequin Monse moment to Chase Infiniti in beaded red Louis Vuitton. White also had a strong presence, while several looks reflected fashion’s current fascination with history: draping, exaggerated hip details and dramatic volumes that feel borrowed from the 18th and 19th centuries, but interpreted for now. Great examples included Joy Sunday in Dior and Abby Elliott in Erdem.
