There’s a romantic, bohemian mood wafting across the European runways, with lots of antique-looking lace, crochet, macrame and floaty silhouettes. Isabel Marant slipped right into the groove with a collection that featured a sea of faded paisley prints, belts made from shells and shaped like butterflies, and strappy shoes with tiny colored stone embellishments.
Kim Bekker, who took over as sole creative director a year ago, pressed pause on the usual rock ‘n’ roll edginess of these collections. Inspired by photographer Sam Haskins’ images from the 1960s, she focused instead on “layering and transparencies” and on some of the lean, easy shapes from the 1930s.
“I wanted everything to feel fluid and ‘suspended'” said Bekker, whose short, swingy tiered dresses came with little capes or poncho tops. Some were made from lace, while others were covered with hazy paisley prints and had beading along the edges.

The retro-romantic mood also came through a sweet pair of wide-leg cotton shorts with crochet details, and a sheer guipure lace top, a lineup of camisoles and slip dresses dotted with fat silver sequins, and a short, white broderie anglaise dress with a single ruffle down the sleeve.
The simpler looks were just as breezy, and included a romper the color of cotton candy and loose-fitting cotton jumpsuits that nodded to the female factory workers of the 1930s. Bekker gave some of them a glamorous edge, pairing lightweight cotton army pants with draped, beaded lingerie tops or little sparkly vests.
Accessories, such as that butterfly belt buckle, came in soft shell pink while delicate silver earrings and belts had more of a Deco feel. Bekker revealed the brand’s softer, sunnier side with this collection, and hopefully that summer romance feel will live on.
