Balmain Spring 2027: Slinking Around

Antonin Tron’s excavation of the Balmain archives led to the discovery of backstage photos by Mark Shaw from 1954 that — minus the pinch-waist midcentury silhouettes — feel very current. (Fashion shows behind the scenes have always been messy and chaotic apparently.)

What got his fashion juices flowing was the deshabille — revealing corsets, bare backs, and the more sensual side of Pierre Balmain’s legacy, which Christophe Decarnin also dug into roughly 20 years ago.

Also on Tron’s spring mood board was a snapshot of an editor appearing scandalized gazing at a leopard-print Balmain dress cut close to the body.

And so Tron cranked up the heat, and sexual provocation, with his sophomore show, leaning into animal prints and slinkier, glossier fabrics, including eel skin, snakeskin-print leather, viscose and silk lamé.

He kept the strong shoulders of the pilot jacket from his debut show, already an early bestseller of his tenure, but cut everything close to the body, with hints of lingerie, including garter belts dangling from miniskirts. Some beaded cocktail dresses were as skimpy as swimsuits.

During a preview, he pointed to a black outfit in cotton sateen with a plunging neckline and an undulating lapel in raw-edged silk. “She looks like she just stepped out of a Cadillac somewhere,” Tron commented, alluding to the slightly louche, ’70s feel of the collection and his mood board of California counterculture.

He staged the show at Hotel de Maison, the Left Bank mansion Karl Lagerfeld called home for decades, a wink to the fact that the late German designer apprenticed at Pierre Balmain in the ’50s.

The windows were lashed with rain and meek sunlight, meant to evoke “a storm in the desert,” according to Tron, who put sunglasses on most of the models to feed that mood.

The collection had more bite and personality than his debut, and you certainly felt Tron’s passion for surfing in all the wet-look fabrics and clinging shapes. Still, it would be nice to see him flex his muscles with more draped jersey creations, one of his specialties, and to chart a fresh new path for the brand.
