Peter Copping’s expansive mood board for his spring Lanvin collection read like a who’s-who of stylish and inspiring women across the 20th century, from Anjelica Huston, Pina Bausch, Thelma Golden and Tina Chow to Jeanne Lanvin herself, who often dressed in black and white.

You could spot some of these muses during the show — Baush by the red shoes and snippets of music from the Wim Wenders’ 2011 documentary about her — and some of the Indian textiles Copping found while rooting around the founder’s office.

He stripped the busy, geometric motifs of color, added mirrors, and applied them to removable plastrons for his suave evening gowns.

This was a low-key, but compelling Lanvin collection, the clothes all fluid, womanly and sophisticated, and with a “future heirloom” quality that Copping is very skilled at evoking.

He opened the show with narrow, fluid coats with shawl collars, worn with pants, as were a series of long, fetching tunics.

Jordan Roth, wearing long blue leather gloves, employed a stylus pen to take photos on his phone. Katie Holmes and Law Roach also studied a collection that is bound to land on many red carpets and fancy parties in the months ahead.

Peplums are trending on Paris runways and Copping’s were restrained, like the rest of the collection. He only went out on a limb, slightly, with fluid, low-crotch shorts with the look of a skirt.

American photographer Lee Miller, the subject of a recent exhibition at the Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, was also on Copping’s mood board, back in her modeling days — wearing Lanvin, no less.

“I think we have to up our game for our look books going forward,” Copping remarked with a grin.
