For Lilia Litkovska, fashion exists within a broader cultural context, and her shows and presentations are often a combination of media, including music, poetry and art.
For collection entitled “Stricha,” meaning “an encounter” in the Hutsut dialect of her native Ukraine, she invited guests to come together over morning coffee at the Café Beaubourg. The show opened with a performance by model Pasha Harulia, who then opened the runway, and musician Dmytro Novichenko.
Within the collection, there were multiple layers of possible interpretation for her theme. Firstly, the meeting with Ukrainian artist Borys Kosarev, whose Cubo-Futurist works informed the masked faces that were embroidered onto satin sweatshirts, for instance. Secondly, Litkovska played with the notion of surfaces, like people, as they come together and begin to interact, revealing or hiding what lies beneath.
In her parable, seams, frayed edging and contrasting materials came into conversation. Dresses and coats were given drawstring details, an element Litkovska already played with last season that was here expanded, meaning the wearer could choose how to style the look, creating different shapes, from a sporty bomber with rounded sleeves to a dress that could have come straight out of a modernist spin on “Little Red Riding Hood.” A blouse became a dress; a cape a coat.

Alongside tailoring with subtly misaligned seams that created movement and added interest, there were tweed and knit pieces with distressed details, a rag rug-like textured apron dress with abstract motifs and a cross-stitch backless top held at the back with padded utilitarian strapping, worn over simple black tailored pants.
