The Row broke with tradition and traveled the Hippie Trail for spring with a collection full of fine handwork, and flower-patterned and madras fabrics that looked as if they’d been picked up at markets in Turkey, South India or Thailand.
Accessories, too, had a freewheeling feel. There were delicate beaded necklaces worn one on top of the other, while most of the models wore flip-flops, sandals or slides with their breezy, bohemian clothing. Although it’s doubtful the brand’s customers have ever roughed it in Southeast Asia, or stayed in anything less than a five-star hotel during their world travels, they’ll still love this dreamy, laid-back collection.
The first look — a pair of tailored trousers, tank top, flowery fabric belt and hippie beads — set the tone, as did billowy white shirts paired with jeans and slides, and a striped sarong-style skirt worn with a white T-shirt and bikini top. Too bad the soundtrack didn’t have George Harrison playing the sitar or singing “My Sweet Lord.”

Even the more formal clothing looked as if it had been improvised on the road. A long, fringed jacquard scarf twisted around the neck to become a halter-style tunic, while two contrasting fabrics were knotted together to form a sari-style top. A dark tailored suit with a long tassel belt dangling from the waist was fit for a beachside dinner on India’s Malabar Coast.
Other looks had more of a vintage feel, including delicate cotton camisoles edged in lace, a whisper-thin crochet halter top, and a shawl that resembled a doily worn around the shoulders of a crinkly raincoat.
A breezy dress made from layers of gold and white lace was a highlight of the collection. But beware — it might get wrinkled rolled inside that backpack, and would be more at home hanging in a walk-in closet at a Four Seasons.
