A Lochmaben father and son are producing remembrance artefacts being used around the world to remember the war dead.

Poppies, soldier statues and regiment badges crafted by Callum and Niall Patterson, of CGP Welding, have been collected all over the UK, and in France and the United States.

In the past weeks, they have been meeting the demand for poppy day, on November 11.

Callum, who operates out of the old dairies industrial estate in Lochmaben, said: “We make all kinds of plaques, pieces of music memorabilia etc, and, for the past 12 months, we have been making remembrance figures and poppies.

“The biggest batch is at this time of year, but we make them all year - it’s important to remember all year round, isn’t it? The local British Legion will benefit from sales.”

Callum and his son, Niall, design each piece by hand before shaping them in steel on a plasma cutting table. The pieces are then painted and coated.

“Niall does the technical stuff,” laughed Callum. “And he’s the man for social media, where we sell a lot of our pieces.”

The poppies and soldier silhouettes are available locally - at the Granite Kitchen in Dalbeattie and the visitors’ centre in Castle Douglas - and on Facebook. Callum and Niall also sell at Dumfries town centre market.
