Breast butcher Ian Paterson's traumatised victims outraged at move to open jail

Last week, his move to a category D prison for low-risk inmates was approved. But in a letter to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, his victims called for the decision to be reversed.

The victims of jailed breast surgeon Ian Paterson have written to the Justice Secretary in a bid to halt his transfer to an open prison.

Glaswegian Paterson, 64, who worked in hospitals around Birmingham, was jailed for 20 years in 2017 for carrying out unnecessary operations.

Last week, his move to a category D prison for low-risk inmates was approved. But in a letter to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, his victims called for the decision to be reversed. They have also launched a petition.

Deborah Douglas, who started the petition, said: “Transferring him would not only undermine the severity of his crimes but also silence the voices of the victims.”

Sally Atterbury, daughter of victim Sylvia said: “What about the victims? Our health and wellbeing needs to be taken into consideration.”
