Hollywood star Glen Powell spotted in Glasgow as streets closed for filming

Several streets have been closed in Glasgow as the city once again becomes the backdrop for a Hollywood film.

Parts of the city centre around Central Station and Blythswood Hill, as well as parts of Trongate, east end Haghill and west end Hillhead were closed off on Saturday. As reported Glasgow Live, the area is being used as filming locations for Edgar Wright's remake of 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film The Running Man this month.

The Paramount Pictures film - which is set for release in November 2025 - stars Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell as Ben Richards, played by Schwarzenegger in the 1987 film. Oscar-nominated Fargo actor William H. Macy, No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin, Barbie star Michael Cera and Marvel actress Katy O'Brian will also appear in the adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novel.

Director Edgar Wright (of Hot Fuzz and Baby Driver) has previously said the film will more closely follow Stephen King's 1982 novel, about a murderous game show in which people are chased around the world, than the 1987 Paul Michael Glaser film.

A number of road closures have been put in place across the city centre between November 10 and November 24. Glasgow City Council said the road closures were in place to allow "filming to take place and for the safety of other road users and pedestrians."

Dev Parkash spotted film crews on Renfrew Street in the early hours of Saturday morning. He said: "It’s great to see Glasgow being used for movies, but it’s causing a lot of hassle due to the road closures as well."

Road closures for filming began on November 10 on Union Place, and filming began in earnest on several city centre streets early Saturday morning (November 16). Parts of Gordon Street, West Nile Street and Mitchell Street near to Central Station closed at 3am Saturday and will remain closed until 10pm.

Cambridge Street is also closed from Sauchiehall Street to Hill Street, as are parts of Hope Street, Renfrew Street, Rose Street, Wellington Street and Gordon Street. Restrictions will remain in place until 10pm Saturday.

Filming then moves on to Blythswood Street and Bothwell Street on Sunday, with parts of both streets closed between between 3am Sunday and 5am Monday. Parts of Douglas Street, Pitt Street, St Peters Lane, St Vincent Lane, Waterloo Street, Wellington Street, West Campbell Street and Cadogan Street will also be closed.

On Wednesday film crews head east, with Trongate used as a Hollywood backdrop. Turnbull Street, James Morrison Street and St Andrews Street will be closed, with further filming will take place in Haghill on Friday, with Aitken Street, Appin Road, Walter Street and Marwick Street used.

Filming will also take place outside of the city centre, with Granby Lane in Hillhead closed for filming on Thursday, including parts of nearby roads Great George Street and Kersland Street. On November 23 and 24 filming then heads back to the city centre, with shooting on Bothwell Street, Wellington Street, Waterloo Street and West Campbell Street.
