Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have generously opened their home to those displaced by the catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles. Yet, they may soon face the harsh reality of evacuation as the relentless fires creep dangerously close to their Montecito residence.
Currently, the upscale neighbourhood remains untouched, but with the rapid spread of the flames, it's understood that the Duke and Duchess are poised to enter "crisis mode" if required.
Insiders report the couple's security detail is actively preparing for a potential evacuation while gathering vital items for their two children, Archie and Lilibet. A neighbour shared: "It's not chaos here yet but the fire is moving fast and we are not taking any chances."
Public safety survival kits have been distributed among residents, which include solar chargers, flashlights, protective gear, ice, water, snacks, and informative pamphlets.
While their community has so far been spared from the devastation, the Sussexes have reportedly allowed friends and family who've had to vacate their own residences to take refuge at their property. Additionally, it is believed Harry and Meghan have contributed essential supplies to support those impacted by the fiery destruction, reports the Mirror.
The devastating wildfires sweeping through California have claimed 10 lives, ravaged communities, and forced thousands to flee their homes, including in areas popular with celebrities. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, have issued a statement on their website addressing the crisis for the first time.
They also provided a list of recommended charities, including fire services and animal welfare groups, for those wishing to offer support. The statement read: "In the last few days, wildfires in southern California have raged through neighbourhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centres, and so much more – affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life."
The Sussexes urged: "If a friend, loved one, or pet has to evacuate, and you are able to offer them a safe haven in your home, please do. Be sure to check in with any disabled or elderly neighbours to see if they need help evacuating. "Some families and people have been left with nothing.
They concluded their message, saying: "Please consider donating clothing, children's toys and other essentials. The American Red Cross is on the ground helping those in need."
Harry and Meghan have announced that Airbnb and 211LA, a non-profit organisation offering housing advice, are joining forces to provide free temporary accommodation for those displaced by the fires. They also mentioned that their long-time partner, the Archewell Foundation, is working with World Central Kitchen to provide meals to both victims and emergency service crews.
Other organisations involved include Cal Fire and LA Fire Department Foundation, which are supporting firefighters, and the Animal Wellness Foundation, which is providing shelter for evacuated animals. Baby2baby is supplying nappies, clothing and emergency kits to affected families, while Compton Cowboys is offering emergency horse transport.
All Power Books, a local bookshop, is keeping its doors open to distribute aid and offer supplies and water for pick-up, according to the Sussexes. Among those who have confirmed their homes have been destroyed in the fires are TV personality Paris Hilton, US actor Billy Crystal, The Princess Bride star Cary Elwes, talk show host Ricki Lake and Oscar-winning songwriter Diane Warren.
