‘Tumbbad’ – Gorgeous Indian Folklore Horror Movie Gets Theatrical Re-Release; Sequel on the Way

by · Bloody Disgusting

After a successful theatrical re-release in India, the 2018 Indian folklore horror film Tumbbad is getting a stateside theatrical re-release this month with a previously announced sequel in the works.

Potente Films founder and journalist Josh Hurtado revealed on social media that Tumbbad will be back in theaters on November 14, 2024.

About the film, “In the rural village of Tumbbad, a decaying castle hides an immeasurable ancestral fortune guarded by something ancient, sinister, and monstrous. Vinayak thinks he can control it, but how long will it be until his own greed destroys everything he’s built?”

Trace wrote in his 2018 review, “Tumbbad manages to be a fascinating look into Indian culture while using the universal theme of greed to make it relevant to anyone watching it, no matter their nationality. It is a beautifully shot and frequently chilling film that flew under the radar at this year’s Fantastic Fest and has emerged to be one of the festival’s strongest entries.”

Actor/Producer Sohum Shah confirmed to Variety in September that a sequel is in the works, with production set to begin in 2025. “The script is ready, took us six years to perfect it,” Shah told Variety. “We cracked the idea with massive difficulty to ensure it does justice to ‘Tumbbad’s’ world.”

Tumbbad was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, Anand Gandhi (credited as creative director), and Adesh Prasad. Adesh Prasad is set to helm the sequel and stated, “Rahi won’t be a part of ‘Tumbbad 2’ as much as we’d love it. He has some fantastic work that he is creating and is coming up and has a jam packed schedule. I am super excited for the world to see his work and the stuff he’ll give the audiences. Rahi’s stamp however will always be on ‘Tumbbad’ and its universe.”

The 2018 film, an India-Sweden co-production, was shot over four monsoon seasons and took six years to complete.  That means it may be a while before the Tumbbad 2 arrives, but stay tuned for additional details as they arrive.

In the meantime, revisit this stunning folklore horror entry in theaters this month.
