‘Weapons’ Star Amy Madigan Joins the Cast of Apple Original Thriller ‘Sponsor’

by · Bloody Disgusting

Fresh off her Golden Globes nomination for Weapons, Amy Madigan has joined the cast of an Apple Original Films thriller titled Sponsor, Deadline reports this afternoon.

James Ponsoldt (“Shrinking”) is directing the film, billed as a psychological thriller.

Jason Segel and John C. Reilly also star in Apple’s Sponsor.

Sponsor follows Peter (Jason Segel), who makes a big mistake when he gets behind the wheel after partying too hard. A terrible accident leaves him with a choice: prison or a recovery program. Convinced he doesn’t have a drinking problem, he begrudgingly shows up to his first meeting and searches for a sponsor. In walks the no-nonsense, charismatic yet enigmatic Jerry.

Peter is convinced Jerry is the answer to his prayers.

The original film was co-written by Jason Segel and James Ponsoldt, and Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Alex Ginno are on board to produce via their label Platinum Dunes.

While we wait to see if Amy Madigan wins a Golden Globe for her memorable performance as the evil Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s Weapons, it’s worth reminding that the veteran actress was a previous Oscar nominee for her performance in 1985’s Twice in a Lifetime. Madigan also starred in Field of Dreams and George A. Romero’s Stephen King film The Dark Half.
