Javier Bardem Wants Revenge Against Amy Adams & Patrick Wilson in New ‘Cape Fear’ Images

We’re exactly one month away from the premiere of Apple TV’s “Cape Fear,” and Esquire has revealed a new batch of images from the psychological horror-thriller series.

“There’s something fable-like about the story,” creator/showrunner Nick Antosca (“Channel Zero,” “Brand New Cherry Flavor”) tells Esquire. “It’s so fundamentally terrifying to anybody who buys into the idea of the safe, healthy American family.”

From executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, the 10-episode limited series is based on both John D. MacDonald‘s 1957 novel The Executioners, which was adapted into 1962’s Cape Fear, and Scorsese’s 1991 remake.

“Each version of the story reflects the mood and atmosphere of the time in which it was made,” says Antosca. “And this one does too. We didn’t set out to say, ‘Well, I’m going to capture the zeitgeist.’ I don’t think that’s a great way to tell a story, but in essence, by osmosis, the mood and the cultural atmosphere seeps into its bones.”

In the show, a storm is coming for happily married attorneys Anna (Amy Adams, Arrival) and Tom Bowden (Patrick Wilson, The Conjuring) when Max Cady (Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men), the notorious killer they are responsible for putting behind bars, is let out of prison — and he wants vengeance.

“The story is evergreen because guilt and vengeance never goes out of style,” Spielberg tells Esquire.

CCH Pounder (“The Shield”), Joe Anders (1917), Lily Collias (Good One), Jamie Hector (“The Wire”), Malia Pyles (“Pretty Little Liars”), and Anna Baryshnikov (Love Lies Bleeding) round out the ensemble.

Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs), Margarita Levieva (“Daredevil: Born Again”), and Patrick Fischler (“Twin Peaks”) will recur.

“Cape Fear” debuts June 5 with a two-episode premiere on Apple TV. New episodes will follow every Friday through July 31.
