FBI offers reward for information leading to the arrest of a new ‘person of interest’ in Brown University shooting

Police in Providence, Rhode Island, on Monday released new videos and photos of the alleged Brown University shooter as the suspect in the deadly mass shooting remains on the loose.

The search for the suspect continues after a person of interest was released from custody Sunday following a manhunt led by the FBI.

One 19-second video clip released by Providence police on X on Monday afternoon shows an expanded view of a person who appears to be dressed in all black walking down a sidewalk. The images were taken hours before the shooting, Colonel Oscar Perez, chief of the Providence police, said during the press conference.

During a press conference, authorities also revealed images and videos with a closer look at the possible suspect, showing the person wearing a black beanie-style cap and a black face mask.

The FBI is offering a reward of $50,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, Ted Docks, FBI Boston Field Office Special Agent in Charge, announced during the press conference.

The manhunt for the gunman who killed two students and injured nine others at Brown University entered a new phase Monday, when Providence police released additional surveillance footage and images of the suspect.

The attack took place on Saturday afternoon during exams in the Barus & Holley Engineering Building.

Law enforcement has not yet publicly identified the suspected shooter or provided potential motives. The suspect remains at large, leaving the Providence and Brown University communities on alert.

Several rounds were fired from a 9 mm weapon, Perez said during the Monday press conference.

With multiple videos and images now released, officials hope someone will recognize the suspect by their walk or attire.

On Sunday morning, police detained a 24-year-old man from Wisconsin as a person of interest. After nearly a full day in custody, he was released late Sunday night when authorities determined he was "not a person of interest at all," Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said.

Who are the victims of the shooting?

The two students killed were identified as 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov and 19-year-old Ella Cook.

Umurzokov, a freshman from Virginia and a naturalized U.S. citizen from Uzbekistan, had earned a full scholarship and was remembered as extroverted and bright. He aspired to become a neurosurgeon and was noted by family and peers for his kindness.

Cook, a sophomore from Alabama and vice president of the Brown College Republicans, was a talented pianist and former French Honor Society member described by friends and her pastor as “incredibly grounded and generous and faithful."

Authorities confirmed that nine others were wounded, including Kendall Turner, a Durham Academy alumna from North Carolina, who remains in critical but stable condition.

Brown University and other schools in Providence have ramped up security measures, with some institutions closing campuses or switching to remote operations out of precaution. (Source: Newsweek)
