Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Gets An Official Update At Last

The MCU will introduce its first family in Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25, 2025. It’s the next movie we should see a trailer from as we’ve already gotten them for the two Marvel movies before it, Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, but filming has only just wrapped, so all we get are sneaky set shots.

Now, we have an official description of the film, a rare bit of news from Marvel itself:

“Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”

While we always focus on the main four leads, it’s a reminder the chief villain of the movie is Galactus, and that Silver Surfer is showing up (in female form). Robert Downey Jr’s recently-announced Dr. Doom is nowhere to be found. Not found yet, in any case. But the idea seems to be that Doom comes from a different universe, which is why he looks like the MCU proper’s Tony Stark, and what universe would that be, if not the Fantastic Four’s?

The idea, of course, is always that the multiverse saga will merge the Fantastic Four world here with the main one, whether that’s teleporting them over America Chavez style, or a “flattening” of the multiverse that may in fact happen down the road. In any case, they will show up in the main MCU by the time Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars roll around. They will no doubt be the biggest players introduce in this current “phase” of Marvel, but Secret Wars is also going to be a gateway into the X-Men coming into play in the wake of those films for the next phase. Marvel is adding a lot to the universe, and certainly moving away from the old Avengers in many ways, with many heroes either dead or replaced.

I have a lot of faith that this take on Fantastic Four seems likely to work. I love the idea of a ‘60s version that will eventually be thrown into the modern day of the MCU, and at the very least, this immediately has the potential to be better than all previously Fantastic Four movies, which is all we can really ask for.
