The Cure Hits No. 1 In America For The First Time On Multiple Charts
by Hugh McIntyre · ForbesThe Cure made fans wait a long time in between new albums, and once the band was ready, their following let them know that they remain loyal. The group’s comeback full-length Songs of a Lost World reaches several Billboard charts in the U.S. this week, and it even manages to bring the rockers to a new high on almost every ranking it debuts on.
Songs of a Lost World appears on half a dozen Billboard tallies in America this week. It’s new to all of them, and it lands at No. 1 on all but one.
Impressively, The Cure score their career-first No. 1 on all five of those rankings. They’ve reached all of those rosters before, and even come close to hitting the top spot in the past, but it seems that a hiatus has done the ‘80s favorites some good, as they’re bigger than ever on almost every roster they land on at the moment.
Songs of a Lost World debuts at No. 1 on all of the following Billboard tallies: Top Album Sales, Vinyl Albums, Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums, and Top Alternative Albums charts. The Cure has appeared inside the top 10 on each of those rankings, but they had to wait decades before finally reaching the summit on all five.
Luminate reports that in its first full tracking period, Songs of a Lost World sold 52,600 copies in the U.S. alone. The alternative rockers replace Tyler, the Creator in first place on the Top Album Sales chart, as his new release Chromakopia dips to the runner-up rung, selling another 44,400 copies in its second stint on the Billboard rankings.
Before this week, The Cure had only missed out on hitting No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart by one space. In 1992, Wish stalled at No. 2 on the list. They’ve scored five top 10 hits on the tally thus far, including their latest win.

Among all the charts that Songs of a Lost World dominates this time around, The Cure has performed best on the Vinyl Albums list. They’ve now accrued nine top 10s, though it took them until now before they submitted the roster. They’ve collected a trio of appearances inside the top 10 on both the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums lists, and just a pair on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart.
