Jr NTR and Saif Ali Khan’s performance uplifts the predictable plot of action drama ‘Devara Part 1’

In his latest action epic “Devara”, megastar Jr NTR takes on the role of a legendary hero who fights to bring peace to his village plagued by violence and crime. However, despite its massive scale and energetic performances, the film struggles to connect on an emotional level according to reviews.

The film, directed by Koratala Siva, transports viewers to a coastal region in South India in the late 1990s. Four villages situated along the treacherous seas are ruled by fear and warfare between rival factions. Jr NTR plays the dual role of a father and son, with the father known as the indomitable warrior Devara who protects the people from pirates and criminal gangs.

When Devara mysteriously disappears, his timid son must step up to confront the nefarious Bhaira, played by Saif Ali Khan, who aims to gain control of the region through any means necessary. A cat-and-mouse game then ensues between the forces of good and evil across the vast and volatile landscape.

Critics note the movie certainly delivers on action and spectacle with impressive sequences set along the dangerous coastlines. Anirudh Ravichander's rousing music score also helps amplify many of the intense fight scenes. Jr NTR also shines in his two roles, showing his ability to portray both a fierce warrior and a shyier character.

However, where “Devara” falters is in developing genuine emotion and depth to its characters. The women have little substance or agency, while the themes of family, sacrifice and moral duty feel one-dimensional and cliched. Despite its three hour runtime, the film also struggles to flesh out its plot in a truly satisfying way.

For fans of Telugu blockbusters craving epic action drama, “Devara” provides entertainment through its technical prowess. But those seeking a moving story or complex characters may find it does not always manage to anchor itself with substance under its magnificent visuals. Still, with a sequel planned, the film leaves intrigue around where its story may travel next.
