Instants is the Instagram-powered Snapchat clone no one asked for
by Karandeep Singh Oberoi · Android PoliceInstagram is officially spinning off its 'Shots' feature into a standalone app, though I'm not exactly sure who it is for.
The app is essentially a Snapchat equivalent, and while Threads could somewhat thrive because of the X/Twitter hate, I'm not sure if a similar Snapchat exodus will take place.

It's time to venture outside of the usual social apps with these hand-picked Android releases

The arrival of the app, named Instants, was first pointed out by 'social media consultant' Matt Navarra on Threads. I tried to download it on both Android and iOS, but the app appears to be unavailable in Canada, at least for now.
Despite that, the listing makes it very (very) clear what the app is all about. It's a Snapchat alternative, but, in 2026.

Here's what the app's description on the Play Store says:
Introducing Instants, an app from Instagram. Share disappearing photos with friends. Connect with your favorite people over life’s little moments.
-Real life, real quick
Get straight to the camera to share with friends, fast. No edits, share instantly.
-Photos disappear
Instants can’t be viewed again once they’re gone, and can’t be viewed after 24 hours.
-Use either app
Share and view instants from here or on Instagram.
Instagram won't split Reels into its own app, but it did give 'Shots' a standalone app... okay.
The new experience is powered by Instagram, so, similar to Threads, you won't need to create a new account. Your Instagram credentials will be enough to gain you entry into Instants.
Also worth noting is that you'll be able to view and share Instants (images shared by others on the Instants app) on Instagram too, making the app a decent choice when you want to quickly send photo updates to your close friends.
Instants is available on both Android and iOS. Expect a deeper dive into the app soon. Until then, check out these screenshots to get a feel of the app.
