I started using YouTube Music with Gemini in Android Auto, and my drives have never been better

Music is a non-negotiable part of almost every drive I take, but finding the right playlist or track while navigating has always felt more distracting than it should.

I usually end up replaying the same mixes or settling for whatever YouTube Music recommends. That changed when I started using Gemini with YouTube Music in Android Auto.

Enable Gemini integration with YouTube Music in Android Auto

Before I could use Gemini with YouTube Music in Android Auto, I had to make Gemini my default digital assistant.

I opened the Gemini app on my phone, tapped the profile picture, went to Settings, and selected Digital assistants from Google. From there, I switched from Google Assistant to Gemini.

Since Android Auto uses the digital assistant selected on my phone, Gemini replaced Google Assistant in the car as well, and appeared on the dashboard the next time I connected my phone.

I also needed to give Gemini access to YouTube Music. Inside the Gemini app, I opened the Personal Intelligence menu, selected Connected Apps, and enabled the toggle for YouTube Music.

This connects Gemini to my YouTube Music account and allows it to find and play songs, albums, artists, playlists, and radio stations based on my requests.

When both settings were enabled, I could invoke Gemini from Android Auto using the microphone button or the usual ‘Hey Gemini’ command.

Gemini feels like having a personal DJ in my car

The best part about using Gemini with YouTube Music in Android Auto is that I no longer have to know exactly what I want to play.

I can describe the occasion, mention a few preferences, and let Gemini build the soundtrack for me.

For example, when I am heading out on a long drive, I can simply say, ‘I am going on a road trip, so play some Hollywood songs related to road trips.’

Within seconds, YouTube Music starts playing a suitable mix without making me search for a playlist or name individual tracks.

The experience gets even better when I give Gemini a few artists to work with.

I am a fan of Sonu Nigam, Shaan, and KK, so I can ask Gemini to play their superhit songs, and it does the job without breaking a sweat.

That flexibility is what makes the integration feel like having a personal DJ in my car. I can request music based on a journey, mood, language, era, or group of artists, and Gemini handles the selection.

More importantly, I can do all of this without taking my eyes off the road or navigating through YouTube Music menus.

Gemini understands the kind of music I want

What surprised me most about Gemini is that I do not always need to remember the exact title of a song. I can describe the track using whatever details come to mind, and it usually understands what I am looking for.

This is a major improvement over traditional voice assistants, which often expect precise commands and give up when I leave out an artist or song name.

For example, I asked Gemini to play that collaboration between SRK and Dua Lipa. I did not mention the full title or any other details, and yet, it was able to start the correct track.

I had a similar experience when I said, ‘Play that Sonu Nigam song from the Dhurandhar movie.’ Even though the request was vague, Gemini connected the artist with the movie and found the track I had in mind.

This ability to understand context makes a huge difference while driving because I often remember a singer, movie, performance, or music video before I recall the actual song title.

Gemini also handles highly specific versions of songs. I can ask ‘Play Demons by Imagine Dragons, but play the concert version from Las Vegas,’ and YouTube Music brings up the live performance instead of defaulting to the studio recording.

Similarly, when I ask it to ‘Play the FIFA theme song,’ it understands that I am referring to Shakira’s track and starts playing it.

I can speak naturally, give Gemini a few clues, and trust it to fill in the gaps.

Less tapping, better music, easier drives

Gemini and YouTube Music have made Android Auto feel much closer to the smart driving companion I always wanted it to be.

I can now ask for music in a natural way and change the atmosphere of my drive within seconds. It is faster, safer, and more personal than manually browsing through the app.

Gemini doesn’t understand every request perfectly, but the convenience already outweighs those occasional misses.

Whether I need energetic tracks for a morning commute or something calmer after a long day, the right soundtrack is now only a sentence away.

This integration may seem like a small addition, but it has become one of the Android Auto features I use most often.
