Disclosure Day is a movie that, ironically, doesn't have much disclosed about it at the time of writing. That is very much by design, and we also get to see one of the greatest directors return to the science fiction genre, specifically a topic he's been mulling over for longer than a good portion of us have been alive: aliens. Director Steven Spielberg has approached the idea of life beyond the stars in many different ways over the course of his career, but as he explained to Empire, Disclosure Day might be the one that finally puts a pin in the stories and angles Spielberg wants to explore when it comes to aliens.
"I have seven solid decades of a vast personal interest in what lies beyond our atmosphere, in the cosmos, and what is within our atmosphere right here on planet Earth," Spielberg explained. "The question has always remained for me: are we alone on our own planet? I cannot imagine that we are alone out there. That question has not only haunted me, but it has inspired me. But, I think, it has now resolved itself to my satisfaction in Disclosure Day."
That's not to say that Spielberg hasn't mulled over whether he would personally like to know the answer to whether we're alone in the universe, whether on planet or off. "If I could know, I would want to know," Spielberg explained. "Who would not want to know? … There are also great questions on what kind of social and theological disruption would occur if such an event was disclosed beyond anyone's reasonable doubts."
Disclosure Day looks like it is less about the aliens and the fact that they exist and more about how humanity comes to terms with not only the fact that they are here, but they've been here, people knew, and didn't tell us. In the age of conspiracy theories, where I legitimately saw someone think they did something when they said there were no stars in the sky from a new photo of Earth during the Aretmis II mission, well, nothing that happens in this movie is going to seem far-fetched.
