Kate Beckinsale Will Battle the Undead in George A. Romero’s TWILIGHT OF THE DEAD

Zombie fans are finally getting another chapter in George A. Romero’s legendary undead universe, and now the project has found its lead.

Kate Beckinsale has officially signed on to star in Twilight of the Dead, the long-developing film that Romero himself envisioned as the closing chapter of his iconic zombie saga.

For horror fans, this is a pretty awesome pairing. Beckinsale already proved she can dominate dark genre storytelling with the Underworld franchise, and now she’s stepping into Romero territory for what sounds like a grim and brutal final showdown for humanity.

The movie has gone through several creative changes over the years. Beckinsale replaces Milla Jovovich, who was previously attached to star, and the directing duties are now in the hands of filmmaking duo Doron Paz and Yoav Paz, whose previous genre work includes The Golem and Plan A. They’re taking over from Brad Anderson.

The story is set in “a decimated earth where the last vestiges of humanity are trapped between warring factions and an evolving undead threat.”

That setup feels perfectly in line with Romero’s long-running fascination with societal collapse and human conflict wrapped inside zombie horror. Romero’s films were never just about flesh-eating monsters. They always had something darker to say about people.

Romero wrote a treatment for the film before his death in 2017 and considered Twilight of the Dead the true conclusion to the saga that started with Night of the Living Dead.

The franchise eventually grew into six main films along with multiple remakes and spinoffs. The last entry released was 2009’s Survival of the Dead, while Twilight of the Dead was first announced back in 2021.

Even though this is being framed as the “final chapter,” producers previously hinted they may continue exploring this world if the movie connects with audiences.

The project also received a boost from Magenta Light Studios, which secured North American distribution rights and plans to release the film theatrically across the U.S. and Canada. The company’s previous releases include Deep Water, Protector, Strange Darlings, and Bride Hard.

Roundtable producer John Baldecchi shared his excitement about Beckinsale joining the film, saying: “We’re thrilled to have Kate Beckinsale starring in Twilight of the Dead. Her extraordinary talent, emotional range, and commanding screen presence make her the perfect actress to lead a final chapter worthy of George’s legacy.”

The Paz Brothers also talked about what it means to continue Romero’s work: “Stepping into Romero’s world is the ultimate privilege for any genre filmmaker.

“This is more than a continuation, it’s a responsibility. We are committed to honoring his voice while delivering a visceral, terrifying, impactful experience for today’s audience that resonates beyond the screen.”

Magenta Light Studios CEO Bob Yari emphasized how important it was to bring the movie to theaters: “George Romero is one of the most successful and influential creatives in the horror and genre space, and his final film deserves to be experienced on the big screen.

“We’re proud to partner with his estate and the filmmakers to bring Twilight of the Dead to audiences. As a standout addition to Magenta Light Studios’ growing film catalog, we are committed to delivering a thrilling theatrical experience for fans who have been waiting years for this conclusion.”

It’ll be interesting to see how this movie balances Romero’s classic social horror roots with modern zombie movie sensibilities. One thing’s for sure, though. Beckinsale fighting her way through an evolving undead apocalypse sounds like a very cool way to close out one of horror’s most influential franchises.
