GAME OF THRONES Movie AEGON’S CONQUEST Sets Summer 2029 Release Date

Winter is coming to the big screen, but apparently it’s arriving in the middle of summer. The first Game of Thrones movie is officially headed to theaters, with Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquestscheduled for release on June 6, 2029.

The film will take audiences back centuries before the original HBO series to explore one of the biggest chapters in Westeros history: Aegon Targaryen’s conquest of the Seven Kingdoms.

Owen Harris, who has already spent some time in Westeros as an executive producer and director on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the movie from a screenplay by Beau Willimon.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the film centers on Aegon I Targaryen, founder of the Targaryen dynasty and the ruler responsible for conquering most of Westeros. His campaign took place hundreds of years before the events of Game of Thrones, giving the movie a huge piece of George R.R. Martin’s history to dig into.

Aegon I has also never been depicted on screen in the franchise, so this will mark the character’s proper live-action debut. Casting hasn’t been announced, which leaves one very big question hanging over the project: Who gets to play the man who conquered Westeros?

Aegon’s story is especially important considering how much of the current Game of Thrones franchise revolves around his descendants. His bloodline eventually leads to Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, along with the rather impressive collection of Targaryens who were also given the name Aegon.

The Targaryen dynasty has already powered HBO’s House of the Dragon, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms explores another era in the history of Westeros.

The original Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling fantasy novels, ran for eight seasons from 2011 through 2019 and became one of HBO’s biggest television franchises.

Harris brings plenty of genre experience to the movie. In addition to directing episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, his credits include Black Mirror, the 2019 revival of The Twilight Zone, and Brave New World starring Alden Ehrenreich.

Willimon is another interesting choice for the project. He created and served as showrunner on Netflix’s House of Cards and later worked as a writer on the acclaimed Star Wars series Andor for Disney+. Putting that creative team on a story about conquest, political maneuvering, royal power, and the creation of a dynasty gives me hope that the movie will be great.

Fans won’t exactly be starving for Westeros while waiting until 2029. House of the Dragon is moving forward with a fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has already been renewed for Season 2.

Still, bringing Game of Thrones to movie theaters is a major move for the franchise. Aegon’s conquest has dragons, armies, rival kingdoms, and enough Targaryen family history to make it a perfect fit for the big screen.
