Sean Astin to Star in a Gritty Scrooge-Inspired Holiday Film SCRUGGS
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThere’s a new twist on a holiday classic headed our way, and it’s bringing some familiar talent along for the ride. Sean Astin is stepping into his first starring role since taking on the SAG-AFTRA presidency, and he’s doing it with a modern spin on one of the most recognizable redemption stories ever told.
The film is Scruggs, an indie project that flips the spirit of A Christmas Carol into something a bit more raw and contemporary. Astin, known to many fans for The Lord of the Rings, stars alongside Calvin Kassab, who plays the title character and also serves as executive producer.
The cast also includes Donnell Clayton (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), Andrew Dawe-Collins (Pitchfork), and opera singer Sarah Catherine Moore making her feature debut.
The story takes inspiration from Charles Dickens’ timeless tale but leans into a more grounded, edgy tone. This version follows a ruthless real estate mogul named Edward Scruggs, who gets pulled into a supernatural journey on Christmas Eve, guided by three unforgettable spirits.
It’s described as an “edgy modern-day take filled with outrageous characters,” blending the familiar beats of the original with a sharper, contemporary edge.
Sam Logan Khaleghi produces under SLK Media Group, with Kassab Pictures backing the project. Direction comes from Zachary Ruda, marking his first feature film. Production recently wrapped in Detroit, Michigan.
Khaleghi shared his excitement about the ensemble, saying, “I am thrilled and elated to have the absolute honor of such an amazing cast.
“We have a diverse corps of talent that delivers both comedy and drama perfectly in our gritty contemporary take that still maintains the traditions and customs of the original literature.”
Kassab also touched on the deeper themes driving the story, explaining, “We live in a world that needs more empathy. The Scrooge archetype is about compassion through shared human moments.”
That core idea feels like the anchor here. Even with its modern setting and rougher edges, Scruggs looks like it’s aiming to keep the heart of Dickens’ story intact while making it resonate with today’s audience.
With Astin leading the charge and a fresh creative team behind it, this could end up being a pretty interesting addition to the lineup of holiday films that try something different.
