Marvel's New ZODIAC Series Will Have a Smaller Budget With Plans for Multiple Seasons

Marvel Studios is making some big changes to its TV strategy, and its upcoming spy thriller Zodiac could be the start of a new approach. The series is reportedly getting a smaller budget, with Marvel hoping to turn it into a show that can stick around for multiple seasons.

According to The Wrap, Marvel Television is preparing for a major shift following the conclusion of VisionQuest next week. After that, the third and final season of Daredevil: Born Again will reportedly be the only Marvel TV series released beforeAvengers: Secret Warsarrives in theaters at the end of 2027.

That leaves Marvel with an opportunity to rethink how it handles its Disney+ shows, and Zodiac will reportedly kick off the studio's next chapter in 2028. The idea is to give "the franchise a chance to reset."

One of the biggest changes involves how much Marvel is willing to spend on its shows. Rather than continuing to produce expensive, movie-sized television projects, Zodiac will reportedly operate on a more modest budget while still allowing "known characters and actors to appear in a supporting capacity."

That's an interesting direction for Marvel, especially with Zodiac being developed as a spy drama. A series focused on espionage, intrigue, and character-driven storytelling could work well without the massive visual effects and action sequences we've come to expect from the MCU.

More importantly, keeping production costs under control could give Zodiac a better shot at lasting multiple seasons. Marvel is reportedly hoping to build something with staying power rather than another expensive series that ends after a handful of episodes.

The change comes after some disappointing developments for Marvel's television lineup. Earlier this year, the studio canceled the second season of Wonder Man, despite previously announcing its renewal. Marvel also revealed that Daredevil: Born Again would conclude with Season 3.

Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum has suggested that viewership plays a major role in determining which shows survive. Speaking on The Brandon Davis Show, he explained: “'Save Daredevil' is great, but we also need 'hashtag Watch Daredevil'."

He continued: "The biggest leverage I have, and I say this all the time, is the actual viewership numbers. That's what people are looking for; that's where I get my power to be able to make something or not. I just want people to watch the show."

It's pretty clear that Marvel wants its TV projects to become more sustainable, and spending less money while building shows that audiences actually return to season after season seems like a smart move.

Personally, I like the idea of Marvel making smaller-scale shows that don't need to feel like six-hour movies. There's plenty of room in the MCU for grounded stories that focus on interesting characters, strong writing, and compelling mysteries.

If Zodiac can deliver a cool spy story while bringing familiar Marvel characters into the mix, it could be exactly the kind of series the studio needs right now.

Zodiac is currently expected to premiere in 2028.
