M. Night Shyamalan’s REMAIN Trailer Sends Jake Gyllenhaal Into a Haunting Supernatural Mystery

She’s unlike anyone he’s ever met, and judging by the first trailer forRemain, that could turn out to be a serious problem.

Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) stars in the new supernatural thriller from M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), and the footage starts by selling us on a budding romance before gradually letting something much stranger creep into the picture.

There are some slight Obsession vibes here, mixed with the kind of eerie mystery you’d expect Shyamalan to have some fun with.

The opening moments sees Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor meet, sparks start flying, and for a moment it looks like we’re watching an unconventional romance.

Then the mood changes. The woman at the center of his life becomes increasingly mysterious, ghostly imagery begins popping up, and suddenly it’s clear there’s something much more sinister going on.

Shyamalan collaborated with best-selling author Nicholas Sparks on the film, which makes the combination of romance and supernatural thriller particularly interesting. Sparks wrote a companion book for the film.

The story centers on a reclusive architect who relocates to a small coastal town to finish his latest project. While there, he meets an alluring young woman who draws him out of isolation, only for their relationship to pull him into a deadly mystery hanging over the town.

The cast also includes Ashley Walters, Julie Hagerty, and Jay O. Sanders. Shyamalan produced the film alongside Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock, and Theresa Park, with Sparks serving as executive producer.

I’m into what this trailer is selling. Remain looks like it could be a really good supernatural thriller, especially with the romance serving as the doorway into something increasingly unsettling.

Gyllenhaal is always great when he gets to play characters caught in strange, psychologically messy situations, and this certainly looks like it gives him plenty to work with.

I’m also curious to see where Shyamalan takes the mystery. I’d love to see him deliver another great movie, and Remain looks interesting enough that I’m looking forward to seeing how the story plays out and what exactly is going on with Dynevor’s mysterious character.
