New Live-Action NARUTO Casting Details Reveal a Very Different Team 7 Than Fans Expected

The live-action Naruto movie is finally picking up serious momentum, and now we have our first real clue about how Lionsgate plans to bring the legendary anime to life.

Fresh casting details have surfaced for Team 7, and while the core trio is staying intact, it looks like the studio is making one pretty significant change from Masashi Kishimoto's original manga and anime.

Earlier this week, fans got excited when it was officially announced that Lionsgate and Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton are moving full speed ahead with the long-awaited live-action adaptation.

Since then, one question has been hanging over the project: What version of the Hidden Leaf Village are we actually getting?

Now, a reported casting call is offering the clearer picture. Rather than searching for actors around the same age as the original Team 7 from the manga, Lionsgate appears to be aging the characters up.

In Naruto, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno begin their journey at around 12 to 13 years old. According to the reported casting listings, however, the studio is searching for performers between the ages of 16 and 20 to portray 16-year-old versions of the iconic ninja trio.

That's a noticeable shift from the source material and could hint at a slightly more mature take on the early chapters of the story.

The reported casting call also specifies that the actors should be "Asian or Mixed Race Asian" and must "speak English fluently." While no actors have been attached to the roles yet, the search is officially underway, and fans will no doubt be watching closely to see who ends up wearing the Hidden Leaf headbands.

The casting descriptions reportedly read as follows:

Naruto – Male, 16 to 20 to play 16. Asian or Mixed Race Asian. Lean, athletic, energetic, expressive, and fearless. Must speak English fluently.

Sasuke – Male, 16 to 20 to play 16. Asian or Mixed Race Asian. Lean, athletic, energetic, expressive, and fearless. Must speak English fluently.

Sakura – Female, 16 to 20 to play 16. Asian or Mixed Race Asian. Athletic, toned, strong-willed, elegant, and intelligent. Must speak English fluently.

Another interesting detail from the report is the expected production schedule. The actors who land the lead roles are reportedly expected to film from January through August of next year, with production set to take place in the United Kingdom.

As for the movie itself, Lionsgate is keeping the story under wraps. There hasn't been any confirmation about which arc the film will adapt, but introducing Naruto and the rest of Team 7 to a new generation of moviegoers means the story will almost certainly revisit the beginning of Kishimoto's world.

Whether that means we'll see the Land of Waves storyline, jump quickly into the Chunin Exams, or follow an entirely different path remains anyone's guess.

Aging up Team 7 changes the dynamic right from the start, and it'll be interesting to see whether that's simply a practical casting decision or a sign that the film is aiming for a different tone altogether.

There's still plenty we don't know about the live-action Naruto, but after years of waiting, the project finally feels like it's moving forward.
