Netflix has released the first official trailer for Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, a new documentary from filmmaker Judd Apatow that digs into the life, comedy, and wonderfully strange mind of Norm Macdonald.

For anyone who spent years watching Macdonald turn awkward pauses, absurd observations, and perfectly timed deadpan delivery into comedy gold, this looks like it could be something special.

Rather than relying on a traditional collection of present-day interviews to tell Macdonald’s story, Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald is built entirely from archival footage, personal photographs, and rare home videos supplied by his friends and fans.

That approach allows Macdonald to remain at the center of his own story and gives audiences another chance to spend some time with one of comedy’s most unpredictable talents.

The film follows Macdonald’s life and career, including his rise on Saturday Night Live and his memorable run behind the desk on Weekend Update. His dry delivery and willingness to chase a joke into increasingly ridiculous territory helped make him a favorite among audiences and fellow comedians.

Macdonald died in 2021, but his comedy continues to find new audiences, while his fellow comedians regularly celebrate the strange and brilliant way he approached the craft.

He could make a simple story hilariously uncomfortable, stretch a joke far beyond where anyone expected it to go, or drop a punchline with such casual timing that it somehow became even funnier.

Apatow is a fitting filmmaker to explore that legacy. He has spent much of his career working in comedy, directing films including The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Funny People, This Is 40, Trainwreck, The King of Staten Island, and The Bubble.
