James Gunn Teases CLAYFACE's DCU Future: "I Can't Wait For You Guys to See What We Do With Him"
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantClayface's future in the DC Universe is looking pretty interesting, and James Gunnhas confirmed that the shape-shifting Batman villain has a lot more trouble to cause in the DCU.
The upcoming DC horror movie Clayface held its world premiere last night, and early reactions have been mostly positive. While we'll have to see what critics have to say in their full reviews, the response so far lines up with the good things we've been hearing since the film's early test screenings.
During the premiere's red carpet event, Gunn spoke with Cinemex about the character's future and confirmed that DC Studios has more plans for him.
"I think one of the most fun things about creating the DCU is being able to tell stories that are very, very different from one another, in very different genres, and yet they all come together at certain points. And yeah, this isn't the last we'll see of Clayface. And I can't wait for you guys to see what we do with him."
That's exciting news, especially since Clayface has the potential to be one of the more disturbing villains in the DCU. While major spoilers from the movie haven't surfaced online yet, it sounds like Matt Hagen will survive the events of his solo film and eventually return to cause more chaos.
We've actually already met this version of Clayface in the animated DC series Creature Commandos, which established the character as part of Gunn's interconnected universe. The big question now is where he'll show up next. Could we eventually see Clayface go up against Batman?
That seems like an obvious direction to take the character, especially with the Dark Knight eventually joining the DCU. Clayface is one of Batman's most interesting enemies, and seeing the two face off in live-action could make for a pretty awesome showdown.
Of course, Gunn isn't giving away any specifics just yet, but his comments suggest that Clayface's story will extend beyond his horror movie debut.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface starsTom Rhys Harriesas Matt Hagen, a rising Hollywood actor whose life takes a horrifying turn as he transforms into a revenge-driven monster.
The film marks DC Studios' first venture into full-on horror, exploring the character's loss of identity and humanity while dealing with destructive love, scientific experimentation, and the darker side of Hollywood.
The cast also includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll, and Joshua James. Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with the story developed by Flanagan.
It's cool to see DC Studios exploring different genres with its characters rather than trying to make every project feel like a traditional superhero movie. Clayface is a great choice for a horror story, and it'll be interesting to see how that darker approach carries over when he eventually crosses paths with other DC heroes.
I'm especially curious to see what Gunn has planned for Clayface's eventual encounter with Batman. There's a lot of potential there for an awesome story.
