by · GeekTyrant

Matt Smith is finally making his way into the Star Wars galaxy, and while he isn’t revealing much about his character in Star Wars: Starfighter, he’s clearly having some fun keeping fans guessing.

The actor recently sat down with Josh Horowitz while promoting House of the Dragon Season 3. During the conversation, the topic naturally shifted to Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming film from director Shawn Levystarring Ryan Gosling.

Smith confirmed that he has already completed filming his scenes for the movie, but when pressed for details about who he's playing, he offered a playful response that only added to the mystery.

“He’s a pretty interesting guy… or girl. Who knows? I can’t say too much.”

Smith’s involvement in the franchise has been a long time coming. Years ago, he was attached to a role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but the character was eventually removed as the film underwent creative changes. While many fans wondered what might have been, Smith sounds perfectly happy with how things ultimately unfolded.

Looking back on the situation, the actor explained that everything worked out for the best because he “loved” making the new film.

What drew Smith to Starfighter appears to be the balance the project is aiming for. During his first conversations with Levy, the filmmaker walked him through the character, the world of the story, and the people who might be involved.

According to Smith, the project combines the massive scope audiences expect from Star Wars with a more personal and character-driven approach.

Fans love the epic space battles and larger-than-life mythology of the franchise, but the stories that tend to resonate most are often the ones grounded in relatable characters and emotional stakes.

Details on the plot remain under wraps, but Lucasfilm appears to be assembling an impressive cast around Gosling and Smith. The film also stars Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Daniel Ings, Mia Goth, Simon Bird, and Flynn Gray.

The screenplay comes from Jonathan Tropper, with Lucasfilm and 21 Laps Entertainment producing. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute the film.

At this point, Lucasfilm is keeping nearly every major detail locked away, including exactly who Smith is playing. Whether he’s a hero, villain, smuggler, Jedi, or something completely unexpected, his teasing comments are sure to spark speculation among fans.

We'll have plenty of time to theorize. Star Wars: Starfighter is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
