THE POWERPUFF GIRLS Are Flying Back to Theaters With a Brand-New Movie
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantThe Powerpuff Girlsare gearing up for another big-screen adventure. After spending years trying to find the right way to bring the beloved Cartoon Network heroes back into the spotlight, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has officially announced that a new The Powerpuff Girls movie is now in development.
The news was revealed during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, marking the first new feature film for Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup in nearly 25 years.
For fans, it’s an exciting update for a franchise that has struggled to regain its footing despite remaining one of Cartoon Network’s most recognizable properties.
At the moment, details about the movie are being kept under wraps. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation confirmed the project is happening, but hasn’t revealed anything about the story, animation style, cast, or creative team.
There’s also no word yet on how this film connects to the previously announced revival being developed by original creator Craig McCracken.
That unanswered question is one of the biggest things fans are wondering about right now. Back in 2022, it was revealed that McCracken had reunited with Cartoon Network to develop a new version of The Powerpuff Girls. Since that announcement, however, updates have been scarce.
With a feature film now moving forward at Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, it remains unclear whether McCracken is involved with the movie, the television revival, both projects, or neither.
The franchise has certainly had an unusual journey over the last decade. Cartoon Network attempted a full reboot of The Powerpuff Girls in 2016, but the series struggled to connect with many fans of the original show.
One of the biggest criticisms was that it moved forward without the involvement of the original creative team or voice cast. The reboot lasted only a few seasons before eventually coming to an end.
Then came the infamous live-action adaptation. Developed for television, the project generated plenty of headlines for all the wrong reasons after reports about its troubled pilot surfaced. The series never made it to air, ultimately becoming one of the more notorious failed revival attempts in recent memory.
Despite those setbacks, the popularity of the original animated series has never really faded. The adventures of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup continue to resonate with audiences who grew up watching the trio protect Townsville from villains like Mojo Jojo, Him, and the Gangreen Gang.
This new movie also arrives during a larger resurgence of classic Cartoon Network properties. Franchises such as Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, and Regular Show have all seen renewed attention in recent years, making The Powerpuff Girls feel like a natural candidate for another shot at success.
Of course, this won’t be the first time the girls have headlined a feature film. The Powerpuff Girls Movie debuted in theaters in 2002 and served as an origin story for the superhero trio.
Directed by McCracken, the film expanded the scale of the series and featured Mojo Jojo's most ambitious attempt to conquer Townsville. While critics generally responded positively, the movie struggled commercially and failed to recoup its production budget at the box office.
Fortunately, that disappointment didn’t end the franchise. The original series continued for several more years and cemented its legacy as one of Cartoon Network’s defining shows.
Now, nearly a quarter-century later, The Powerpuff Girls are getting another chance on the big screen. Whether Warner Bros. chooses traditional 2D animation, CG animation, or a combination of both, the key to making this revival work feels pretty straightforward.
Fans want the energy, humor, action, and charm that made the original series such a phenomenon in the first place. The franchise has tried several different approaches over the years, but none have captured that magic in a lasting way.
This new movie could finally change that. If it embraces the spirit that made audiences fall in love with the tiny superheroes from Townsville, it might be exactly the comeback The Powerpuff Girls have been waiting for.
