Tom Cruise Reveals the Brutal Challenge of Wearing His DIGGER Prosthetics and Body Suit

Tom Cruise is known for being an actor who is down for anything to pull off a role, especially when stunts are involved. He has flown jets, jumped off of buildings, dangled from helicopters, and done stunt driving on motorcycles, but he faced a new challenge in making his upcoming dark comedy drama feature, Digger, from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

Cruise opened up about the hardest part of taking on the role of Digger Rockwell in the Kelce Brothers’ New Heights podcast, saying:

“The first time I was like, you know, having that extra weight, my knees, I'm wearing the cowboy boots, sitting down. All of a sudden, we had a thing.

“It was like ‘Digger up, Digger down,’ you know? And I'm sweating, because I'm wearing these prosthetics, and the sea takes you were talking about, they're long takes, and the rhythm of it and how you really have to know what you're doing, but I'm sweating underneath.

“So I came up with all these different things, like cooling machines. I'd be like, ‘Alright let's Digger up.’ Everyone’s there. Now, we go like, in between a take it’s like, ‘Let's Digger down.’”

Everything about Cruise is nearly unrecognizable in this film. It’s interesting to hear what he had to do between takes just to get through the day. He went on to talk about an extraordinary ten-minute monologue in the movie that the Kelce brothers were impressed by:

“Listen, a ten-minute monologue, one take, in a fat suit! And when you see it… I was like, ‘Oh man,’ because you start sweating. I don’t want to sweat my makeup off.”

Digger follows an eccentric oil tycoon scrambling to prove he can save humanity after helping cause a massive ecological catastrophe. Cruise is joined in the cast by Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman and Jesse Plemons, with Iñárritu directing his first English-language feature since The Revenant.

Digger hits theaters on October 2nd.
