Leonardo DiCaprio Was Offered the Joker Before Heath Ledger but Never Even Responded
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIt's hard to imagine anyone other than Heath Ledger playing the Joker inThe Dark Knight, but it turns out Christopher Nolan had two other major Hollywood stars in mind before casting him. One of them was Leonardo DiCaprio, who apparently never even bothered to respond after receiving the script.
Nolan's longtime casting director, John Papsidera, recently shared some interesting details about the casting process during the Nashville Film Festival. According to TV Intelligentsia, DiCaprio was the first actor approached for the role, followed by Joaquin Phoenix. When neither worked out, the filmmakers turned their attention to Ledger.
It's interesting how things eventually played out for both actors. DiCaprio went on to work with Nolan on Inception, while Phoenix eventually got his own opportunity to play the Clown Prince of Crime in Todd Phillips' Joker films.
During a separate interview with Collider, Papsidera explained how the casting process unfolded without mentioning the actors by name.
"There was three actors really that we talked about, Heath being the third. There was certainly more actors, but we discussed it in specific terms with two actors.
“The first one we never heard back from. The second one came in and told us why he didn't want to do the movie, because he didn't want to do big movies. And the third one was Heath."
When Ledger finally entered the picture, though, he and Nolan immediately connected over their interpretation of the Joker. They weren't looking to make him another traditional comic book villain. They wanted someone who thrived on chaos and destruction.
"Heath talked about how he saw the role as an anarchist in that all he wanted to do was tear everything down and that's exactly how Chris saw it and wanted it portrayed," Papsidera explained.
Looking back, it's pretty awesome how everything worked out. I still remember when Ledger was first announced as the Joker and how much complaining there was from fans.
A lot of people couldn't believe Ledger was going to play Batman's greatest enemy. A lot of fans thought it was terrible casting. Then the movie came out, and Ledger absolutely blew everyone away.
His Joker became one of the greatest comic book movie villains of all time, earning him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Nearly two decades later, his performance remains the standard that every new big-screen Joker gets compared to.
DiCaprio is an incredible actor, and I'm sure he would've brought something interesting to the character. But there's no way I can imagine him delivering a performance as awesome as Ledger's. Ledger completely owned that role, from his unsettling mannerisms to his unpredictable energy and twisted sense of humor.
It's one of those casting decisions that couldn't have worked out better, especially considering Nolan didn't initially have Ledger at the top of his list.
What’s funny is that DiCaprio says that The Dark Knight is his favorite Christopher Nolan movie!
