Must Watch IMAX Featurette Shows How Christopher Nolan Pulled Off the Impossible With THE ODYSSEY
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantIf you were already planning to see The Odysseyon the biggest screen possible, IMAX just gave you even more reason to make that happen.
A brand-new four-minute featurette has been released, and it dives deep into what makes Christopher Nolan's latest film such a massive technical achievement.
It's packed with new behind-the-scenes footage, fresh shots from the movie, and a fascinating look at how Nolan and his crew managed to create the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
The featurette doesn't just celebrate the scale of the production. It also explains the challenges that came with using IMAX cameras for every single scene. Anyone familiar with the format knows those cameras are famously loud, making dialogue scenes incredibly difficult to shoot. T
o solve that problem, IMAX developed a brand-new "blimp," a housing that fits over the camera to dramatically reduce its operating noise. It's one of those innovations that could have a lasting impact on future productions that want to take full advantage of the format.
The video also includes commentary from Nolan's longtime cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, who talks about finally realizing what had long been considered an impossible dream.
Along with the technical insights, the featurette offers several gorgeous shots from the film that haven't appeared in previous promos, giving fans another taste of the incredible visuals waiting on the big screen.
Watching this featurette makes it clear this isn't a movie you'll want to experience on the big screen. The film was designed from the ground up for IMAX, and seeing it in that format at least once almost feels essential.
Nolan's adaptation of Homer's legendary ancient Greek epic transforms the classic story into a mythic action thriller filmed across stunning locations around the world.
The story follows Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War, facing legendary dangers including Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the powerful witch-goddess Circe before finally making his way back to his wife, Penelope, on the island of Ithaca.
Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, joined by an incredible ensemble that includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, and many more.
With less than a month remaining before its release, anticipation couldn't be much higher. Every new look at The Odyssey makes it seem even more ambitious, and this IMAX featurette does an great job showing just how much work and innovation went into bringing Nolan's vision to life.
The Odyssey is a movie built to be experienced in IMAX and it arrives in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026.
