Skyler Gisondo Thinks THE PEOPLE V. GORILLA GRODD Takes Place Before MAN OF TOMORROW

Skyler Gisondo has offered some insight on where he thinks Jimmy Olsen’s wonderfully bizarre Gorilla Grodd series fits into everything.

The Superman star will return as Jimmy for HBO Max’sThe People v. Gorilla Grodd, a true-crime-style series centered on the Daily Planet reporter investigating a murder case involving DC’s super-intelligent ape.

According to Gisondo, the series might take place before the events of Man of Tomorrow, although Gisondo admits he isn’t completely certain about the finer details of the timeline.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Gisondo initially placed the series before both movies before revising his answer:

"I think it’s somewhere before the events of the movies [Superman and Man of Tomorrow]. I think it's sort of somewhere in between the two. I don't know, I should probably know the answer. I think the idea is it's kind of like, almost adjacent to this main timeline but before the events of the second movie."

The series definitly sounds like one of the strangest live-action projects DC Studios has cooked up so far. Jimmy and a team of journalists will dig into Gorilla Grodd’s prison sentence after he’s charged with murdering his father in Gorilla City.

The investigation will examine whether Grodd was actually guilty, giving the absurd premise the treatment of a straight-faced true-crime documentary.

Taking a character as ridiculous and dangerous as Gorilla Grodd and dropping him into the format of a murder documentary feels perfectly suited to the weirder side of the DCU.

Jimmy Tatro will play Grodd, while several familiar Daily Planet characters from Superman are also coming back. Beck Bennett returns as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover reprises her role as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce is back as Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White.

Jimmy won’t be the only TV character crossing into Man of Tomorrow, either. John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre, is also expected to appear in the movie following his introduction in Lanterns.

There’s currently no confirmed release date for The People v. Gorilla Grodd, but production is underway. Man of Tomorrow, meanwhile, has already wrapped filming and is headed to theaters next year.

Even though Jimmy’s Gorilla Grodd investigation happens first chronologically, it looks like audiences could end up seeing Man of Tomorrow before they find out exactly what went down with Grodd in Gorilla City.

Either way, giving Jimmy Olsen his own true-crime series about a murderous super-intelligent gorilla is exactly the kind of wonderfully odd comic book idea that could make the larger DCU a lot more fun.
