Elijah Wood Addresses Aragorn Recasting in THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM - "Those Are Tough Boots [To Fill]"

by · GeekTyrant

Fans are still wrapping their heads around the idea of returning to Middle-earth, and Elijah Woodrecently weighed in on the recasting of Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and his comments make it pretty clear this next chapter will look a little different from what we remember.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, host Josh Horowitz brought up the challenge of stepping into Aragorn’s boots, referencing rumored casting: "Tough act to follow for someone to play Aragorn... Leo Woodall, that's true."

Wood didn’t dodge the topic and replied: "Right, that is true. That's gonna be tough... Those are tough boots [to fill]... but that's gonna be great."

It was previously retported thaty Viggo Mortensen will not return to play Aragorm in the film as they need a younger actor in the role. Considering how closely fans associate Mortensen with Aragorn, stepping into that role is no small task.

Leo Woodall has reportedly been cast in the role, but there’s been no confirmation. Not sure if he’s the right choice, but no one will be as good as what Mortensen brough to the character, and that’s what’s hard about the whole thing.

Now, the decision does make sense when you look at where this story fits in the timeline. The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum pulls from the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original work, focusing on a mission that takes place before the main trilogy kicks off.

In the story, Gandalf suspects Gollum might reveal crucial information about the One Ring to Sauron, so Aragorn is sent out to track him down. That setup calls for a younger version of the character, which explains the need for fresh casting.

Andy Serkis is not only directing the film, but also returning as Gollum. On top of that, Sir Ian McKellen is set to return as Gandalf, adding another familiar presence to the mix. As for Wood, he hasn’t officially confirmed whether Frodo will appear, but McKellen already said he would be.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to hit theaters on December 17, 2027, giving audiences plenty of time to debate, speculate, and get ready to return to Middle-earth once again.
