Christopher Nolan Explains Why Matt Damon Was His Perfect Odysseus: “One of the Greats”
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantWhen The Odyssey hits theaters this summer, it won’t just be another epic adaptation of Homer’s legendary tale, it’ll be a full-scale cinematic swing fromChristopher Nolanwith Matt Damonstepping into the sandals of Odysseus.
Now Nolan is opening up about why Damon was his guy for the role, and it turns out the decision came down to something pretty simple… he thinks Damon is operating at the highest level.
Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Nolan didn’t overcomplicate his reasoning when asked why he cast Damon as the iconic Greek hero.
He said Damon “is one of the greats.” The two have already worked together on Interstellar and Oppenheimer, and Nolan clearly trusts what Damon brings to the table.
For Nolan, the pitch itself didn’t need flair. He explained, “I got that thrill of being able to call him up and say, ‘How about Odysseus?'” He added that this was a “one-word pitch,” further stating, “It’s right there.”
That doesn’t mean Nolan sugarcoated the challenge. He made it clear early on that this wasn’t going to be an easy shoot. He recalled telling Damon the production would be “very hard.” The response? “Yeah, I know. I know.” Nolan even doubled down, making sure Damon understood just how demanding things would get.
When Colbert mentioned Damon had called it the “hardest movie” he’s ever made, Nolan didn’t disagree. He said the experience was “incredibly challenging” for both him and the crew in “all the right ways.”
According to Nolan, tackling this story required that level of intensity because the source material is “the greatest epic in literature.”
The director also pushed for authenticity in a way that sounds both exciting and exhausting. “We did want to get out there and really try and do a lot of these things for real,” he elaborated. “Really get out there on the seas, climb the mountains, go in the caves, all of that.”
Damon didn’t just show up ready to act either. For the role, he committed to a strict diet and intense physical training, transforming himself to fit the mythic warrior king. If Nolan wanted a believable Odysseus, it sounds like he got one.
The film also brings together a killer ensemble, including Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
The Odyssey is going to be a massive cinematic event. The film is set to arrive in theaters on July 17, 2026, and if Nolan and Damon’s track record is anything to go by, this journey is going to be worth the trip.
