Anya Taylor-Joy Leads a Radical Eco-Warrior Uprising in Netflix’s SACRIFICE Trailer

by · GeekTyrant

Netflix is throwing Anya Taylor-Joy into a marble mine with a group of armed eco-warriors, a bunch of wealthy hostages, a mysterious relic, and a prophecy that could change the world.

That’s the wonderfully strange story driving Sacrifice, the new satirical action thriller from Romain Gavras, and the official trailer offers a wild look at what he’s cooked up.

The film marks Gavras’ first English-language feature and follows Taylor-Joy as Joan, the leader of a radical environmental group that crashes an elite fundraising gala being held inside a stunning marble mine. The activists are hunting for a relic they believe can unlock supernatural powers.

Joan and her siblings were changed by the fiery death of their mother, and a mysterious volcanic prophecy has convinced them they’ve been chosen to cleanse the Earth. Their mission leads them to hijack the gala and take three people for a sacrificial ritual.

Those hostages include movie star Mike Tyler, played by Chris Evans, whom the group considers a hero; billionaire Ben Bracken, played by Vincent Cassel, whom they see as their villain; and Katie, an unfortunate performer played by Ambika Mod, who becomes their designated lover.

From there, the night spirals into something much stranger as the story plays around with belief, performance, salvation, sacrifice, and just how far people will go when they’re convinced they’re doing something necessary.

Netflix describes the movie as: "Thought-provoking, visually arresting, and powered by a kinetic original script co-written with Will Arbery (also of Succession), Gavras' Sacrifice is a satirical action-adventure & visually explosive epic led by a magnetic star-studded ensemble."

Taylor-Joy and Evans are joined by Salma Hayek, Sam Richardson, Yung Lean, Charli XCX, and John Malkovich, along with Cassel and Mod.

Sacrifice comes from a filmmaker who knows how to create visually intense chaos. Gavras previously directed Our Day Will Come, The World Is Yours, and Athena, along with numerous music videos and short films. This time, he co-wrote the screenplay with Will Arbery, whose credits include Succession.

Sacrifice originally premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where the response proved pretty divisive. Some viewers hated it, others found things to like, and some were completely on board with Gavras’ ambitious swing.

Netflix will release Sacrifice for streaming on October 16th, 2026.
