AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Rumor Reveals Wild Alternate Origins for Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantMarvel fans are still trying to piece together howAvengers: Doomsday is going to introduce one of the most iconic villains in comic book history. Now, a fresh rumor is shedding light on some unexpected ideas Marvel Studios reportedly kicked around for Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Doctor Doom.
Right now, the most consistent story floating around ties Doom’s origin directly to the fallout of Avengers: Endgame. Specifically, Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers choosing to stay behind with Peggy Carter.
That decision is said to have triggered a multiversal incursion that led to the deaths of Victor Von Doom’s wife and child. Naturally, that kind of loss would push anyone toward revenge, and in this case, Doom sets his sights on Captain America and the Avengers.
It’s a clean setup that is personal, emotional, and easy to connect with. But according to a recent report, Marvel didn’t land on that version right away.
One report reveals several alternate directions the studio explored before locking things in. And they weren’t exactly playing it safe. MTTSH shared:
"Doom’s origin story didn’t always involve him having a family. Other versions included his parents dying, one where he believed he was a reincarnation of Tony and that he 'belonged' in the MCU, and one of the most insane ideas had him working for Mephisto, who was the real bad guy. Another version had him obsessed with either Pepper Potts or Sue Storm."
That reincarnation angle is especially interesting. The idea that Doom might see himself as a version of Tony Stark adds a whole psychological layer to the character. It also would have created a direct and very weird connection between Iron Man and Doctor Doom, especially with Downey playing both roles.
Apparently, though, the current plan avoids digging into why Doom looks like Tony Stark. His face will be scarred, though, leaving him unrecognizable.
There’s also the expectation that Downey will barely appear without the mask, and when he does, it won’t be in front of other characters. So if you were hoping for a big in-universe explanation, that might not be happening.
Still, just because these ideas didn’t make the final cut doesn’t mean they’re gone for good. Marvel has a habit of recycling concepts, and with Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, there’s plenty of room for some of these elements to resurface in certain ways.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.
