Russell Crowe Wraps Filming on Henry Cavill’s HIGHLANDER Reboot and Shares Exciting Update

by · GeekTyrant

Fans of Highlanderhave been waiting a long time to see this reboot finally come together, and now Russell Crowe has officially finished filming his role in director Chad Stahelski’s highly anticipated reimagining of the classic fantasy action franchise, and he shared the news during a recent appearance at the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily.

Crowe was on hand to receive the festival’s International Achievement Award and promote his upcoming film Bear Country, but it was his update on Highlander that immediately grabbed the attention of genre fans.

According to reports, Crowe revealed: “I just finished the shoot of Highlander.” The actor is taking on the role of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, the legendary immortal mentor who trains Henry Cavill’s Connor MacLeod.

Fans of the original 1986 film will recognize the character as one of the most important figures in MacLeod’s journey, making Crowe’s casting a particularly interesting choice for the reboot.

Crowe also had plenty of praise for Stahelski, whose action credentials are hard to argue with after directing the John Wick franchise. Speaking about the filmmaker, Crowe said:

“It’s by Chad Stahelski, who directed all the John Wick movies, so you know he is incapable of directing a film that is not exciting,”

Cavill leads the film as Connor MacLeod, the immortal Scottish blacksmith who finds himself caught in a centuries-spanning conflict among immortal warriors. Joining him is Dave Bautista, who will play the infamous Kurgan, one of the deadliest and most feared Immortals in the mythology.

The cast also includes Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Jeremy Irons. Production on Highlander officially kicked off on January 28, 2026, in Scotland.

Filming was pushed back after Cavill suffered a training injury during preparation for the physically demanding role. Once cameras started rolling, the production moved through several international locations, including London, Poland, and Hong Kong.

The film has a reported budget of $180 million and backing from Amazon MGM Studios through United, and the studio appears to be betting big on the property, and Stahelski has previously discussed ambitions for Highlander to serve as the launchpad for a larger franchise, potentially growing into a new trilogy.

The film draws inspiration from the beloved 1986 original, which introduced audiences to a secret world of immortal warriors battling through the centuries for a mysterious and powerful Prize.

It’s a concept that has remained popular with fans for decades, and many are eager to see how Stahelski’s action-heavy style reshapes that mythology for a new generation.

Crowe’s announcement that he has wrapped his scenes is a strong sign that production may be entering its final stretch. While there’s still work to be done before audiences get to see Cavill wielding a sword on the big screen, the reboot seems to be moving steadily toward the finish line.
