Dave Filoni Considered Turning AHSOKA Into a STAR WARS Movie Before It Became a Disney+ Series

It turns out, Dave Filoniwas trying to crack Ahsoka as a feature film before realizing the story needed a lot more room to breathe.

At the premiere of The Mandalorian and Grogu, Filoni reflected on the evolution of Star Wars storytelling and revealed that the idea of an Ahsoka movie was something he seriously explored long before the Disney+ series came together withJon Favreau.

When asked by News18 Showsha whether the future of Star Wars leaned more toward movies or streaming shows, Filoni explained that both formats are essential to the franchise.

“We'll see, I mean obviously we needed both,” Filoni said before talking about the cinematic roots of Star Wars and the franchise’s upcoming 50th anniversary.

Then he dropped an interesting bit of history about Ahsoka: “I love what I've been able to do,. I couldn't figure out how to make Ahsoka into a film, way back when, even before I started working with Jon [Favreau].

“So after working with Jon, I'm like, 'Oh, I get it, it's a series.' And so some stories work better for that, and some stories are movies, and I think we need it all. I think it's all part of what drives the big eco-system that is Star Wars.”

Ahsoka Tano’s story has grown across multiple eras of Star Wars canon, and squeezing all of that mythology, character development, and world-building into a two-hour movie would’ve been tough.

The Disney+ format gave Filoni space to pull threads from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and The Mandalorian while setting up larger conflicts involving Grand Admiral Thrawn and the future of the galaxy.

Ahsoka first appeared as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan in the 2008 Star Wars:The Clone Wars animated movie, which Filoni directed. At the time, plenty of fans weren’t sure what to make of the character. Fast forward to now, and she’s become one of the most beloved figures in the franchise.

After starring in The Clone Wars and Rebels, the character finally made the jump to live-action in The Mandalorian Season 2 with Rosario Dawson stepping into the role. She later returned in The Book of Boba Fett before leading her own series with Ahsoka.

Even though Ahsoka Season 2 won’t arrive until 2027, Lucasfilm has already teased some pretty awesome things for fans to look forward to.

During Star Wars Celebration 2025, it was confirmed the new season will feature battles spanning two galaxies, Admiral Ackbar going head-to-head with Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the return of Hayden Christensen. It was also announced that Rory McCann will take over the role of Baylan Skoll following the passing of Ray Stevenson.

As for what’s next on the big screen, The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22.
