Peter Jackson's THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN Sequel Gets a Promising Update From Andy Serkis

There are a handful of films in Steven Spielberg’s catalog that don’t get talked about nearly enough, and The Adventures of Tintinis definitely one of them.

Released back in 2011, the film delivered a wildly fun, visually inventive ride that felt like classic Spielberg adventure storytelling. Peter Jacksonwas supposed to direct the sequel, and some fans are still wondering if that will ever happen. Now, there’s finally a small but hopeful update.

The original film pulled from several of Hergé’s beloved comics, leaving plenty of material on the table for future installments. That potential has been hanging in the air for over a decade, but nothing concrete has ever materialized. Still, the idea hasn’t completely faded away.

During a recent interview, Andy Serkis, who played Captain Haddock in the film, shared his thoughts on the long-gestating sequel. His enthusiasm hasn’t gone anywhere:

“Oh gosh, I wish! I really hope so. I love that Tintin film,” he said. “I loved the process of making that film with such great filmmakers. I think Peter [Jackson] really, really wants to make it, so hopefully down the line.”

The plan from the beginning was for Jackson to take over directing duties on the sequel, swapping roles with Spielberg, who would step back into a producer role. It’s a creative trade-off that fans have been curious to see play out. Hearing that Jackson is still interested is easily the most encouraging part of this update.

Of course, there’s still a big question hanging over everything. It’s been about 15 years since The Adventures of Tintin hit theaters. That’s a long gap, even by Hollywood standards.

Both Spielberg and Jackson remain incredibly busy, constantly juggling new projects. Spielberg is currently deep in post-production on his sci-fi project Disclosure Day, while Jackson is producing The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which Serkis himself is set to direct.

Even if the creative team aligns again, there’s another hurdle. The first film was backed by Columbia Pictures and Paramount Pictures, and any sequel would likely need similar studio support.

The industry has shifted quite a bit since 2011, and priorities at these studios aren’t the same as they once were. Even with Spielberg and Jackson attached, getting the green light isn’t guaranteed.

That would be a real shame because The Adventures of Tintin still holds up as one of the most entertaining adventure films of its time. It captured that old-school treasure-hunting spirit, packed with inventive action sequences and brought to life through impressive motion capture animation.

There’s also the fact that filmmaking technology has come a long way since then. If Jackson and the team ever return to this world, they’d have even more tools to push the visual storytelling further.

There have been rumors that the sequel will be based on a two-part story from the series, Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun, and that it would be called The Adventures Of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun.

The plot involves Tintin and Captain Haddock investigating a strange illness that has befallen seven explorers who have discovered an Incan tomb, before traveling to Peru to get to the bottom of the mystery.

For now, this update doesn’t confirm anything concrete, but it does show that the door isn’t closed. As long as the people involved still want to make it, there’s always a chance. Fans might not want to get too comfortable, but at least there’s finally a reason to keep hoping.
