TOP GUN 3 Rumored Director Shortlist Revealed and it Doesn't Include Christopher McQuarrie
by Jessica Fisher · GeekTyrantTop Gun 3 was officially announced at CinemaCon last month, with Tom Cruise returning to star, and Jerry Bruckheimer on board to produce.
It was revealed that the script is currently being written by Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger, and Christopher McQuarrie is also believed to be involved.
No director has been confirmed to be attached, as Top Gun: Maverick director is working on Miami Vice '85, so he is not available.
McQuarrie also seems like a great fit, as he’s directed Cruise in several action flicks in the past, but he’s also unavailable, having signed onto both a Conan the Barbarian sequel with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and a Battlefield movie with Michael B. Jordan.
But we do have an inside look at who may be stepping up to helm via a report from The InSneider, who claims Jon M. Chu (Wicked, G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Joachim Rønning (Tron: Ares, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), and the directing duo of Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Ms. Marvel).
There are a few others in the mix as well, but their names remain a mystery for now. Regardless, if any of the aforementioned directors land the film, it would be their first time working with Cruise.
Sneider previously speculated that Logan director James Mangold could be a top choice for the studio, especially if High Side is well received, but it remains to be seen whether this will work out.
