First Look at Netflix’s GHOSTBUSTERS: NIGHT SHIFT Reveals a New Team of Paranormal Heroes in 1994 New York

The Ghostbusters franchise is gearing up for another animated adventure, and Netflix has finally offered fans a first look at its upcoming series, Ghostbusters: Night Shift.

The new show is set to expand the supernatural world of ghost hunting while taking the franchise back to a fascinating point in its timeline, and it look like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Along with the first images from the series, Netflix has revealed that Ghostbusters: Night Shift takes place in 1994, five years after the events of Ghostbusters II.

That means the show will explore a version of New York City still living in the aftermath of some seriously bizarre paranormal events, including the time the Ghostbusters marched the Statue of Liberty through Manhattan.

Netflix teases: “New York City, 1994. Five years after the Ghostbusters took the Statue of Liberty for a walk, a new supernatural threat hits the Big Apple. Now, a group of young New Yorkers must suit up, face their fears, and bust some ghosts.”

Rather than focusing on the classic team, the series introduces a fresh generation of ghost hunters who find themselves facing a dangerous new wave of supernatural activity. It sounds like the show will blend the franchise’s trademark comedy with plenty of ghostly action while carving out its own place in the larger mythology.

Netflix describes the project as being “the next chapter in the franchise’s ghoul-catching legacy, bringing supernatural comedy and paranormal action back to animation.”

The series comes from Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation and features an impressive creative team. Executive producers include Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, Amie Karp, and Dan Aykroyd.

Reitman, the son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman, has become one of the key creative voices guiding the franchise alongside Kenan. The duo previously collaborated on Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, helping connect the classic films to a new generation of fans.

Of course, animation has always been an important part of the Ghostbusters legacy. Netflix acknowledged that history in its announcement, noting:

“This isn’t the first time the Ghostbusters universe has gone animated,” Netflix reminds in their press release today. “The 1980s and ’90s saw The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters take over the small screen.

“For now, you can rest assured: If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, a Ghostbuster will be on the job — even if it’s after hours.”

That connection to The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters should be exciting for longtime fans who grew up with the animated side of the franchise. Setting the story in the early '90s also opens the door for all kinds of fun callbacks while allowing the series to tell completely new stories.

Netflix hasn’t announced an exact release date yet, but Ghostbusters: Night Shift is expected to arrive sometime in 2027.
