Idris Elba Shuts Down James Bond Rumors and Says He Was Never Really in the Running
by Joey Paur · GeekTyrantFor years, fans have campaigned to see Idris Elba step into the tuxedo as the nextJames Bond. Every time the franchise hit a transition point, his name shot right back to the top of the wishlist.
But now that Amazon MGM Studios is officially searching for the next 007, Elba is making it clear that the role was never actually his to lose.
Speaking with People, Elba finally addressed the long-running speculation surrounding Bond and completely shut down the idea that he was ever seriously part of the process.
“I’m honestly not in the race ever,” he said. Before further adding, “I wasn’t in the race in the first place.” That’ll probably surprise some fans who’ve spent years imagining Elba bringing his cool, commanding screen presence to MI6. Still, the actor sounds more amused by the whole thing than frustrated.
The actor went on to explain that the franchise is heading in a different direction now, and it sounds like producers are aiming for a younger actor to carry the series forward for the long haul.
“My name’s not getting thrown out, no way,” Elba stated. “They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing.”
The timing of his comments comes as Amazon MGM officially confirmed that the hunt for the next Bond has begun. The studio released a statement saying:
“The search for the next James Bond is underway. While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”
The next era of the franchise is being overseen by Amazon MGM executive Courtenay Valenti, alongside director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman.
During the Cannes Film Festival, Valenti said the next actor cast as Bond needs to “ooze sex appeal,” and whoever lands the part will likely be signing on for at least three movies.
That’s a big commitment, but expected from a franchise this big. Daniel Craig carried the franchise for a very long time. Craig debuted as Bond in Casino Royale in 2006 and wrapped up his run with No Time to Die in 2021.
Even though Elba says he was never truly in the mix, his name became one of the most talked-about fan picks in Bond history. But, I guess it was never meant to be.
