Alan Ritchson in Talks to Lead Sony’s HELLDIVERS Movie From Director Justin Lin

Following Jason Momoa’s exit from the project, Alan Ritchson is in talks to star in Sony Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of Helldivers, with Justin Lin still attached to direct. If the deal comes together, the Reacher star will play one of the Helldivers sent into battle to defend Super Earth.

Sony hasn’t commented on the potential casting, and additional roles have yet to be announced. Plot details are also being kept under wraps, but the Helldivers movie already has a theatrical release date set for November 10, 2027.

Ritchson is a perfect fit for this particular universe. The Helldivers games mix massive sci-fi warfare, awesome amounts of firepower, chaotic teamwork, and a satirical obsession with spreading freedom and Managed Democracy across the galaxy.

Ritchson has the physical presence for the action, and he’s also proven that he can handle comedy without losing the tough-guy edge that has made him such a strong action star.

The original Helldivers launched in 2015 as a cooperative twin-stick shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios. Players join the elite Helldivers and fight alongside one another to protect Super Earth from humanity’s enemies in an intergalactic war.

Helldivers 2 took that concept to a much bigger scale when it arrived in 2024. I’m a big fan of the game and still enjoy playing it. In it, Helldivers charged with spreading peace, liberty, and Managed Democracy using some of the biggest and most destructive weapons available.

The sequel became a monster success, and that success makes a Helldivers movie an obvious addition to Sony and PlayStation Productions’ growing lineup of video game adaptations.

Hutch Parker is producing alongside PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have already teamed up on several major game adaptations, including Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Unfortunatley, it sucked. The companies have also worked on Peacock’s Twisted Metal series and HBO’s Emmy-winning The Last of Us.

The big question now is what kind of Helldivers movie Lin and Sony are putting together. The games have plenty of material for a huge sci-fi action spectacle, but their absurd propaganda, dark comedy, friendly-fire disasters, and over-the-top patriotism are a huge part of what makes the franchise so much fun.

Ritchson could fit right into that madness!
