THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM Teaser Hides a 'Precious' Secret Message Only Tolkien Fans Will Catch

by · GeekTyrant

Middle-earth is calling once again, and the first teaser forThe Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum has kicked off production in a fun way that sparked some excitement.

While the video celebrates the first day of filming, it also slips in a hidden message written in one of J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional languages, giving fans a little mystery to solve.

The teaser opens with Andy Serkis, who is pulling double duty as both director and Gollum, walking onto a soundstage wearing the character's iconic motion-capture suit. He then steps into Gollum's twisted persona, hisses "action" toward the camera, and officially gets filming underway.

From there, the teaser shifts to the breathtaking landscapes of New Zealand, the same stunning locations that helped define Peter Jackson's original The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It's a nostalgic reminder that fans are heading back to the world that made Middle-earth feel real on the big screen.

Before the teaser wraps up, there's one final surprise. A message flashes across the screen written in Cirth, Tolkien's fictional runic alphabet. Unless you've spent years studying the lore, there's a good chance it looked like complete gibberish.

Thankfully, Reddit user StarlightAndLife already cracked the code. The inscription translates to:

"Something precious awaits."

It's a perfect little nod to Gollum and the One Ring, and exactly the kind of hidden detail Tolkien fans love hunting down.

The film is set before The Fellowship of the Ring and follows Aragorn as he searches for Gollum during one of the lesser-explored chapters of Tolkien's story. The cast brings back familiar faces, including Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo.

Joining them are Anya Taylor-Joy, Lee Pace, Leo Woodall, and Jamie Dornan, who takes over the role of Aragorn from Viggo Mortensen.

Serkis has also recently addressed the film's use of AI-assisted visual effects and explained that the production will use AI for some de-aging work but stressed that it isn't replacing the filmmaking process, saying: "Every shot is created in a traditional way."

There's still a long road ahead before audiences return to Middle-earth, but this first teaser is a fun way to mark the beginning of production while giving Tolkien fans a little puzzle to solve along the way.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
